According to the “Plan of Complex Measures for 2006 – 2010 concerning the improvement of environmental condition in the Republic of Azerbaijan” approved with the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic dated to 28th of September 2006 the Department of Environment of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is planning to organize a conference titled “Restoration of polluted lands – proposed methods” on November 3 – 4, 2008 with the aim to give detailed information about the activities implemented at the Absheron Peninsula in the field of cleaning lands polluted with oil, joint consideration of technologies used, to conduct comprehensive discussions for evaluation and future use of proposed technologies in a way of restoration of polluted lands.

The aim of the conference is to present to the public the experience of SOCAR in remediation of polluted lands applied in restoration of lands polluted with oil and to give detailed information about the works done. Besides, considering the soil features of Absheron Peninsula there is going to be discussed the scientific basics and possibility of application of various technologies proposed for restoration of polluted lands, will be conducted an exchange of information related to issues of experience of different countries in the field of remediation of land and use of state of the art technologies. Thus, it is considered to learn the experience and proposals of representatives of corresponding scientific research institutes, ministries, committees and non – governmental organizations and discuss the interesting ideas and their application possibilities. It is expected the participation of representatives of board of SOCAR, departments of the company involved in production, subcontractors, National Academy of Sciences, scientific research institutes, intelligentsia, representatives of foreign companies and state officials at the conference.
The chairwoman of the ELS Independent Research Center Mrs. Irada Yagubova is also invited to participate at the conference. She is going to give a speech with report titled, “Oil polluted lands: new technologies and old problems”. With the aim to update the existing database and the pack of proposals the volunteers of the Center had conducted monitoring of Surakhani, Sabunchu and Binagadi districts and took photos during the recent two weeks. After the results of monitoring are analyzed they are going to be reflected on the report presented to the conference.
